Eating Before Bed

Eating Before Bed, Questions Answered.

Doc, should I eat anything before bed, does it really make a difference, and what should I be eating before bed?  I have heard these questions countless times over the years, and yes, it will make a difference. Eating a late meal is not the best because solid food can disrupt the sleep process, just as what you eat will make a difference. You are going to relax and sleep, so you don’t require carbohydrates for energy…what you need is Amino Acids/Protein to recover and rebuild the body as you sleep. A whey and casein protein shake is best as it will cover your immediate recovery need, plus the casein protein is slowly released throughout the sleep period, including the important REM sleep period. It doesn’t need to be a huge 24-ounce drink…go for an 8-10 ounce drink with 15-20 grams of protein… and it should taste good so you look forward to drinking it…consistency is the key here, and should be consumed every night, not only on workout days. Hey, Doc. What are the roles of fats in building muscle and fueling the body? When should I eat fats throughout the day?
